Inevitably Spain was drawn at last into the war. Her neutrality had been greatly strained by her French sympathies. In vain she had interceded on behalf of France. She felt that further neutrality was merely hastening her own destruction. Ricardo Wall, once England's zealous friend, shouted in anger to the Earl of Bristol that all the English aimed at was "to ruin the French Power, in order the more easily to crush Spain;" to drive Spain's subjects from their island colonies; and "to destroy their several Forts and Settlements on the Continent of North America." In this mood Spain renewed the Family Compact (1761); then England declared war.
