Exploration by Hernando de Soto: [Arredondo note t By the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega [La Florida del Inca,passim.] It is common knowledge that Charles V entrusted to Hernando de Soto the conquest of Florida, giving him the titles of Adelantado and Marquis of an estate thirty leagues long and fifteen wide, in any part which he might designate of the country he should conquer, and granting him for the duration of his life the titles of governor and captain-general of both Florida and the island of Cuba at the same time. 8.
