5. In the meantime the Spanish settlements spread from 32° 30' toward the south, and toward the west as far as Apalache, Apalachicolo, Cassita, Caueta, and neighboring provinces, with so much spiritual fruit among the Indians that in the general chapter which the Franciscan Order held in Rome in the year 1612 it was considered necessary to erect Florida into a province. To this the assembly agreed, naming it Santa Elena,* [Arredondo note * The organization which exists at the present time, preserving to this province the same title.] in honor of the settlement there of which this saint was titular advocate and patroness.
