A few [Indian traders] clearly belonged to a class above 'the poorer sort of People.'65 [Note 65: Warrants for Lands, 1692-1711, pp. 218,241, show that Thomas Welch owned a plantation near Round O Savannah in 1709; and that in 1711 he received warrants for 300 and 400 acres in Colleton county.
