It was four years before the fiscal of the Consejo found time to address the problem [of Governor Qurioga asking for no church bells at night 5/22/1689]. He proposed that at night the priest should ring the church bell once to signal the departure of the viaticum, then content himself by having someone walk in front of him and ring a handbell AN243. This would not reduce the sum of reverence, the fiscal reasoned, for corsairs were mostly heretics. If they gained entrance into the city they would profane the temples, the sacred vessels, and the Sacred Host itself (Consejo de lndias, 1693). By then, the tempest had long since calmed itself and Father Leturiondo was embroiled in a different dispute, this time a conflict with the Franciscans over mission secularization. (Bushnell SS)
