By an order of August 11, 1720, which pointed to the great importance of South Carolina as a frontier as well as its commercial value, the government was taken provisionally into the hands of the Crown. The Board was directed to prepare a commission and instructions for Francis Nicholson, and to propose such further measures as were necessary for the safety of the province. 52 [Note 52 c.o. Nicholson's instructions are in Rivers, Chapter, pp. 68-91.] Another Order in Council of September directed that a scire facias be procured to vacate the charter. 53 [Note 53 C.O; Liberty and Property, 1726] But the Proprietors bowed to the inevitable, and this attack was not pressed.
