In 1697, of the 70 Franciscans authorized for Florida, 9 were on assignment to St. Augustine: the padre provincial, the guardian of the convent, a preacher, a lay brother, a teacher of Latin grammar, a situador, and three linguists to confess the Indians in the labor camps (Torres y Ayala and Menendez Marquez, 1697).
