Governor Quiroga built a belltower for the "iglesia mayor parroquial"; he ordered "a great quantity of piedra de sillerla," the stone for ashlar masonry, brought to the hermitage of San Patricio on the outskirts of town; and he enlarged the shrine at the hospital of La Soledad into a little church complete with a campanario, leaving a stack of wooden shakes [Note: These were called "tejamani," in this case spelled "ebtagamani."] to his successor to reroof it, "because it rained in everywhere" (Quiroga y Losada 1697).
