Unfortunately official promises were not always kept, nor were individuals—Spaniards or Indians—always careful to observe rules of conduct laid down by their leaders. Incidents arose that caused bitterness and misunderstanding and sometimes led to open revolt. Such was the case with the Iororos, a small tribe living at Mayaca on the Saint John’s River near present-day Sanford. Governor Zuniga’s predecessor, Laureano de Torres y Ayala, had set off the revolt in 1699 when he seized an Iororo and brought him to Saint Augustine without giving him a fair hearing. In 1701, after failing to obtain justice, the Iororos fled their village to take refuge in the mountains to the north. [Note 2: gov to king 3/10/1701] (Tepaske GSF)
