The same chief [Nanhuluchuba] complained bitterly that the commandant at Fort San Luis, Jacinto Roque Perez, had abused his Indians and treated them as slaves. Alarmed that the Iororo incident might be repeated in Apalache, Zuniga rushed his troubleshooter, Juan de Ayala Escobar, to the province to relieve Don Jacinto of his command and to re-establish friendly relations with the natives. [Note 7: gov to king 6/22/1701] Ayala carried out his orders, But Roque Perez had bred discontent among the Apalaches. Enticed by English gifts of muskets, rum, and cloth, some Vitachuco tribes forsook their Spanish ties even before Moore swept through the province in 1704. (Tepaske GSF)
