English expeditionary troops from Carolina laid siege to St. Augustine in the fall of 1702, occupied the town for fifty days and burned most of the city as they retreated. En route to St. Augustine, the English troops had attacked Spanish mission villages. Some of the villagers had advance notice of the attacks and were able to run toward St. Augustine for refuge.
