A Case Study: The Residencia of Governor Joseph Zuniga y Cerda Joseph de Zuniga y Cerda governed during the early years of Queen Anne’s War, one of the most chaotic periods in the history of Spanish Florida. For a time it looked as if Spain would lose its precarious foothold in the Southeast to English and Indian invaders, but Governor Zuniga successfully led his 1,600 colonists through the most perilous days of the war. He managed both to beat back the enemy and to prevent disease and starvation from decimating the colony.
