Moore’s Revenge: The Massacre at Ayubale While Zuniga was laying plans to rebuild Saint Augustine, Moore was organizing another campaign against Florida. When he returned to Charleston early in 1703, the English governor found himself exceedingly unpopular. He had failed to take Saint Augustine, had incurred a colonial debt of L26,000 for the costs of the expedition, and had lost valuable ships and supplies in his hurried retreat. Some Carolinians also accused him of organizing the 1702 assault on the Florida capital to avoid an investigation of illegal election practices in which he was involved. In any event, his failure the previous year did not deter Moore, who seemed determined to salvage his reputation as a military leader by launching a new attack on the Spaniards. (Tepaske GSF)
