In January, 1704, Moore beat an equally destructive path through Apalache. His force of 1,000 Carolinians and Indians ran wild through the province, plundering, raping, and murdering at will. According to Spanish reports, English Indians (Yamasees and Chiscas) devised “exquisite methods of torture” for those who challenged them. They tore some Apalaches limb from limb and plunged white-hot knives into the trembling bodies of others. “Like hungry wolves,” stated one observer, they impaled and murdered the Spanish Indians until “the grass turned scarlet with the blood of these poor people.” [Note 10: Provincial Fr.
