When Governor Francisco de Corcoles y Martinez took office in 1706, he either forgot the royal order or, more probably, ignored it. With Zuniga anxious to leave for his new post and Corcoles eager to assume his new responsibilities, neither evidently wanted to bother with a time-consuming residencia. Quickly investing Corcoles with the governorship, Zuniga sailed for Cuba on the same ship that had brought his successor to Saint Augustine. With the cedula of 1703 [2/10/1703 appointing the SA secretary as royal commissioner] lying neglected in his gubernatorial files, Corcoles turned to the pressing problems of his colony, probably hoping the entire matter of the residencia was closed.
