This attempt to avoid the residencia requirement failed. Refusing to let Zuniga and Corcoles make a mockery of royal law, the newly crowned Philip V demanded a review of Zuniga’s administration, despite the fact the former governor had departed for Cartagena. [Note: Gov to king 9/30/1706] In Florida, however, Corcoles refused to act and frankly told his superiors that he was too busy fighting hostile Indians to be bothered with a troublesome residencia. [Note: Certificacion por escribano publico sobre las causas que han vistos para no haber entrado a tomar la residencia, 9/20/1706] But this candid replay only convinced the king and the Council of the Indies of Corcoles’ arrogance, and they sternly ordered him to set up the machinery for the residencia without further delay.
