Father Superior Sedeno took advantage of the Adelantado' s absence to close the Jesuit mission to Orista and Guale. At the time he was shipwrecked with Menendez at Cape Canaveral, Sedeno had been on his way to Havana to recuperate from a long and debilitating fever that was his personal portion of the epidemic that swept like a firestorm through Santa Elena and the native communities in 1569 and 1570. Although the hardships of the journey on top of his illness left him with chronic asthma, Sedeno went on to become the first missionary of the Society of Jesus in Mexico and one of the first four Jesuits assigned to convert "the Indians of King Philip" in the Philippines (Sedeno, 1572).
