Despite the viceroy’s adamancy, the governor still contemplated a campaign against Carolina. In March, 1708, Corcoles proposed a plan by which he would lead a Spanish force to Charleston along the protected channel formed by the coastal islands of Georgia and the mainland. Using Guale Indians as guides, he hoped to transport his force in dugouts and canoes along the coast and avoid the dangers of a land march or travel on the open sea. [Note 46: gov to king 3/20/1708; Informe del gobernador de la Florida 2/27/1707] In an attempt to implement his plan, Corcoles induced the Spanish commandant at Pensacola to ask the viceroy for 2,000 men, five frigates, four launches, eight to ten cannon, four mortars, and 200 grenadiers and lancers.
