Corcoles quickly spend the 26,000 pesos and soon began requesting more. In August, 1709, he presented a claim of 56,520 pesos, the value of the buildings leveled in 1702, and asked the king to provide additional funds for reconstruction. Using Zuniga’s techniques, Corcoles painted a dismal picture of families forced to live in temporary quarters, in crowded conditions at Fort San Marcos, or in the homes of friends and relatives. [Note: gov to king 8/13/1709] His plea was successful. Philip V granted Corcoles an additional 20,000 pesos to carry out plans to rebuild Saint Augustine. Again the king tapped the three vacant sees of Puebla, Guatemala, and Guadalajara to finance the reconstruction, [Note: viceroy to king 12/20/1714] and by the end of 1716 money from the new allocation had arrived in Saint Augustine.
