During the war Carolina traders had furnished the Yamasees with muskets, powder, shot, and rum on easy terms, allowing the Indians to pay for these items gradually in kind—in corn, beans, furs, and other commodities. Then in 1713 when the war ended and the English no longer needed Yamasee military aid, the Carolinians demanded immediate payment for what they had sold to the Yamasees. When the Indians could not pay, these traders seized Yamasee wives and children as slaves and murdered the heir of the principal chief. In desperation the Indians rebelled against their English masters. Some made their way into Florida to seek a reconciliation with the Spanish governor. [Note 14: Consejo 1/8/1716] (Tepaske GSF)
