The first Franciscans to come to Menendez's Florida [Note: Five Franciscans accompanied Panfilo de Narvaez to Florida in 1528 and shared the fate of his expedition], a mission of two priests and a lay brother, arrived late in 1573, conducted by Fray Alonso de Reinoso. They took up residence in Santa Elena and St. Augustine and ministered mainly to the spiritual needs of Spaniards. Evangelism took the form of itinerant preaching, the time-honored "flying mission."
