Throughout 1723 the governor and the bishop exchanged bitter words over the Acebedo-Lodares affair. In March, 1723, the governor pointed out in a letter to the king that Lodares Cota had been involved in many scandals in Saint Augustine but that lack of legal jurisdiction over the clergy made him powerless to prevent them. His only recourse was to forward his findings to the bishop of Cuba for his disposition. [Note 62: gov to king 3/17/1723] For his part the bishop took the case to the Council of the Indies.
