All sorts of peoples arrived in St. Augustine as defenders, as laborers on the defenses, and as refugees and runaways [1724]. And the port brought in all sorts of persons, yet behavior in St. Augustine was kept structured, stable, and conservative by the military regime and the Roman Catholic Church--both institutions offering hierarchy and stratification.
