Escudero [on 10/20/1734] thus sketches the history of these returned Yamasee during the first few years: "I remained among them, in those deserts, during three years, at which time they had all become Christians. Just then the Vehipes (Note: Probably misread from Ochisses) [Creek] Indians, instigated by the English, came down upon us, but after the loss of some men, I succeeded with my Indians in withdrawing from those woods and falling back upon St. Augustine, where we joined the other Indians of the same nation, so that united we could resist the attacks of the enemy.
