Benavides might have avoided at least some of this humiliating treatment if his scouts had kept him abreast of events at Fort King George. In the winter of 1725, unknown to the Floridians, the blockhouse had burned to the ground, and the tiny English garrison there retired—with relief—to more comfortable quarters in Port Royal. Just when Benavides learned of the destruction of Fort King George is not clear, but within at least six months after the fire an English work party was back on the original site rebuilding the fort.
