That the English took revenge on the Floridians for these Indian raids is not surprising. Late in 1727 irate members of the governor’s council in Carolina proposed a retaliatory expedition to repay the Spaniards for atrocities committed on the border. The council first proposed a two-pronged attack—one on the Lower Creek villages in northern Apalache and the other on the Yamasee villages near Saint Augustine. Later, however, its members decided to concentrate on the Yamasee towns nearer the Florida capital. Colonel John Palmer, a member of the Commons House of Assembly in South Carolina and a veteran Indian fighter, was chosen to head the expedition, consisting of 100 militia and 200 Indians. This group set out from Charleston in small boats in February, 1728. (Tepaske GSF)
