In 1728 the Carolinians under Colonel John Palmer wrought havoc among these Indians. A member of the South Carolina Commons House of Assembly and a veteran Indian fighter, Palmer swept down from Carolina to get revenge on the Yamasees for their rebellion in 1715 and their more recent scalping of English traders near Fort King George. Palmer successfully avenged the Yamasee atrocities in Georgia. Leading 100 whites and 100 Indians into the Saint Augustine area in March, 1728, he killed 30 Yamasees, took 15 prisoners, and sacked and burned the important Yamasee town of Nombre de Dios (Macaris). Significantly, not a single Spanish soldier ventured out of Fort San Marcos during the 3-day attack.
