Philip V had already set the wheels in motion to bring this strategic, wayward colony to order. In 1731 he had nominated don Francisco de San Buenaventura Martinez Tejada, a Franciscan and a Spaniard, Auxiliary Bishop of Cuba for Florida. Martinez Tejada concluded his duties as a professor of theology and guardian of a convent in Seville, sailed to New Spain in 1732, was consecrated at Vera Cruz with the title of Bishop of Tricale, [Note: By tradition, the titular diocese given to an auxiliary bishop at consecration preserved the name of an inactive bishopric. Tricale was in Asia Minor.] and arrived in St. Augustine, at last, in July 1735. (Bushnell SS)
