Antonio de Benavides served almost 17 years, longer than any other 18th century governor. Twice Philip V extended his term, much to the distress of the unhappy Benavides, who constantly fretted over his continuance in office. He claimed that the abominable Florida climate was ruining his health and that he could not even mount his horse because of excruciating pain from old wounds, aggravated by the damp, unsalutary air. But the king ignored these complaints. He found it easier to keep Benavides in the governorship than to find a capable replacement for the beleaguered administrator. (Tepaske GSF)
