In addition [to bringing in Canary Islanders] the governor wanted to revive Zuniga’s scheme of obtaining the entire subsidy in hard money. If Florida cold get its yearly grant in specie, he claimed he could secure supplies at lower prices in Havana, Campeche, and Vera Cruz, breaking the monopoly of Puebla merchants, who charged such exorbitant prices to his situadista. [Note: gov to king 6/30/1734] ...Apparently, therefore, Moral hoped to get the situado entirely in hard money to stimulate [his illicit] trade further and to get cheaper, higher quality goods from the Carolinians.
