In 1736 Morals position grew weaker, when, in his desperation to stay in power he made arbitrary arrests of key citizens who opposed his regime in Florida. The governor first seized Felipe de Iturrieta, commander of a Cuban infantry company on detached service in Florida. According to Moral, the Cuban officer had willfully disregarded his orders and urged all Cuban soldiers to ignore the governor’s commands that they take their turn at guard duty alongside the Florida regulars.
