In still another Case Moral clashed with his sergeant major, Ignacio Rodriguez Rozo. Rumor had reached the governor that his second-in-command had been critical of gubernatorial policies and was conspiring to overthrow Moral. Deciding to approach his aid directly, the governor confronted him with the rumor and asked Rodriguez how he would change these policies. If possible, stated Moral sweetly, he would redress any legitimate grievance. Rodriguez retorted curtly that he had no grievances. Again the governor repeated his question and again Rodriguez came back with the same reply. Moral, who probably hoped to get his sergeant major to reveal facts concerning a possible conspiracy against him, became angry and seized Rodriguez on the charge of treason. Five other arrests followed a similar pattern, keeping the Saint Augustine jail well filled with colonial dignitaries.
