In London English officials seemed sincerely desirous of resolving the Indian question. Acting on Oglethorpe’s report, the Duke of Newcastle ordered the governor of South Carolina to stop agitating the Lower Creeks against the Floridians. Negotiations had already begun in Europe to settle the Indian problem, and further raids would only impair these discussions. Before it reached Charleston, two Carolinians—John Wright and James Childs (Childemas)—had persuaded the Uchizes and Talapuses to make another incursion into Florida, destroying all hope of an amicable settlement.
