Montiano also made proposals for reform, but he took issue with Benavides on the language problem. Montiano advocated that interpreters in the convent teach the Indian languages to the missionaries. To aid their learning, the governor asked for the compilation of an up-to-date dictionary of the Indian language to be distributed to those taking instruction. To stimulate those who showed no aptitude for learning the various native dialects, the governor suggested compulsory daily reading periods over and above the time spent by the more able students. Once the friars mastered the Indian tongues, stated Montiano, they could carry out their mission work effectively. [Note 114: gov to king 7/11/1738] (Tepaske GSF)
