The War of Jenkins’s Ear and Spanish Indian Policy, 1739-1745 Indian activity in Florida during the War of Jenkins’s Ear demonstrated the utter failure of the Spaniards to win the allegiance of the Indians, who fought on the English side. Even before hostilities began officially, the natives had cut a destructive path through Florida. In the fall of 1738 Oglethorpe used the Uchizes to block the trail from Saint Augustine to Apalache.
