Pedro Menendez and most of his lieutenants, including Pedro Menendez Marquez, tried to limit their demands on the natives to carrying baggage and providing food when they were on the march. [Note 106: Alonso de las Alas and Juan Menendez Marquez 12/13/1595; Gaspar Marquez, Chief of San Sebastian and Tocoy 6/23/1606] They even obtained a 6-year grant from the crown entitling Florida to the surplus Indian tribute from Yucatan: maize, blankets, honey, chickens, and wax.
