At this juncture, early in 1740, Montiano counted his effective fighting force in Saint Augustine at 613 men—308 Cuban regulars on detached service in Florida, 80 regular infantrymen, 32 artillerymen, 50 armed Indians, 61 militiamen, 43 free Negroes, and an 80-man garrison in Apalache.
