The next day the Georgian led a band of his soldiers and Indians southward toward Fort San Diego, and two days later won an easy victory over the 57 Spaniards garrisoning the fort, only 20 miles north of Saint Augustine. Leaving Lieutenant George Dunbar and a small group of militia to hold the stockade, the Georgian returned to the rendezvous point at the mouth of the Saint John’s to begin the second stage of his offensive.
