The next day the English fleet sailed southward and anchored off the Bar of Matanzas, where they evidently hoped to force an entrance to Saint Augustine harbor at the Matanzas Channel. On September 10 two English dugouts began taking soundings along the bar. Immediately, the Spanish blockhouse at Matanzas Point laid down a withering cannon fire on the two craft, one of which suffered a direct hit and barely reached the larger men-of-war before sinking.
