The Lower Creeks Return to Spanish Allegiance The Uchize request for Spanish aid in 1745 was a sign of the gradual drift of a large number of tribes back to Spanish alliances. As hostilities diminished during the War of Jenkins’s Ear, the English in Georgia and South Carolina began cutting the flow of rum, muskets, powder, shot and other supplies to the Indians. In response, tribes like the Uchizes began casting about for a new benefactor. Their request for a new trading post and their visit to Apalache in 1745 was evidence that the English were no longer so generous and that they were willing to let the Indians seek out new friends.
