Later governors followed the same pattern. Melchor de Navarrete (1749-1752) had spent 42 years in the army before taking the governorship. He had been active in New Granada (Colombia) at Cartagena, where he had fought valiantly against the English expeditionary force led by Admiral Edward Vernon in 1740. His most distinguishing characteristic, however, was his penchant for complaint. His correspondence contains a stream of letters concerning back, chest, and leg pains aggravated by the Florida climate. (Tepaske GSF)
