At the same time Indians enjoying the governor’s aid and protection in villages near Saint Augustine and Apalache began drifting away. Near the Florida capital late in 1759 only 79 Indians remained in the two villages of Tolomato and Nuestra Senora de la Leche. Near San Marcos de Apalache there remained only one village with no more than 25 inhabitants. (Tepaske GSF)
