By 1600, members of the three mendicant orders had to choose between retiring to their monasteries to pray the Divine Office or taking their missions to the bishop-free frontiers. Augustinians and Dominicans by and large chose the contemplative life; Franciscans preferred activity. (Bushnell SS)
