Despite the optimism displayed in Florida for the king's benefit at the turn of the century, the restored doctrinas of Guale did not lead the Spanish toward fabled Tama. The factions of Guale's civil war were still alive and would remain troublesome until the French ceased to visit the province for sassafras around 1610. (Bushnell SS)
