The Indians who were the objects of conversion often showed more interest in the trappings of religion than in the content. Governor Fernandez de Olivera, sending an order for "ornaments and vestments and all the supplies for altars," asked the Crown to be sure that some of the bells were "around two arrobas or a little more, to which these people have taken a fancy" (1611).
