Reports of cacique visits to St. Augustine in the 17th century are noncommittal on the subject of whether governors used the gasto de indios for trading, exchanging gifts, or remunerating services; they record only the formula that the governors have "regaled" the chiefs and sent them to their homes again "content" (Ruiz et al., 1612; Rojas y Borja, 1628).
