Although they covered 200 leagues of backcountry, the three parties succeeded only in relocating Hernando de Soto's "lagoon of pearls" (Rojas y Borja, 1625. Spain, at war with the Dutch since 1621, was in no position to undertake the conquest that would have been required to exploit an inland pearl fishery. (Bushnell SS)
