A letter dated November 15, 1633, states that... the Province of Apalachee... contained 15,000 to 16,000 Indians, which... is of course another gross exaggeration, though indeed more moderate than one of 30,000 made in 1618 and another of 34,000 made in 1635.2 This last placed the number of Christian converts in the province at 5,000, probably more than the total Apalachee population.
