“Sequestered Signers: The Lives and Revolutionary War Confinement of Thomas
Heyward, Arthur Middleton, and Edward Rutledge in St. Augustine”
During the American Revolution, St. Augustine was a refuge for Loyalists and a prison
for Patriots. Among the South Carolina Patriots confined in St. Augustine after the
British capture of Charleston in 1780 were three signers of the Declaration of
Independence: Thomas Heyward, Arthur Middleton, and Edward Rutledge. Dr. Boyd
Murphree, Political Papers Archivist with the University of Florida Smathers Libraries,
explores the lives of these three sequestered signers before, during, and after their
involuntary exile in the capital of British East Florida.
Boyd Murphree is the Political Papers Archivist for the University of Florida Smathers
Libraries. A former archivist with the State Archives of Florida, he holds a PhD in
history from Florida State University. Among his publications are The Governors of

“The Plantations of Northeastern Florida in Global Perspective”
For roughly a century, from the British period (1764-1784) up to the U.S. Civil War
(1861-1865), the economy, society and politics of northeastern Florida grew
increasingly dominated by plantation agriculture. However, many characteristics
commonly taken as paradigmatic of American plantations–namely a strict racialized
binary between white ownership and Black enslavement–emerged only gradually,
mediated by the individual proclivities of would-be planters and the relatively diverse
character of local elites during the Second Spanish period (1784-1821) and the early
U.S. territorial period (1821-1845). In this lecture, Dr. Miller will contextualize these
local experiences within the global account offered in his recent volume with SUNY
Press, Plantation Knowledge: Agricultural Colonization, Exploitation, and Exchange
Since 1500, providing pathways for understanding the plantations of Northeastern
Florida not merely as exceptions from general American patterns, but rather as typical
of plantations in new sites of commercial agriculture and in contested spaces of
political sovereignty.

"Florida Loves Manatees: Manatees and Florida Culture"
This program examines the interactions between humans and manatees in Florida
history and culture, and how this docile sea mammal has become a Florida icon while
its very existence is threatened by human activity. Combining science and history, Dr.
Steve Noll looks at how the manatee is important to Florida’s very “hu-manatee”
Dr. Steven Noll received his Ph.D. in American History in 1991, his M.A. in 1985, his
M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of Florida in 1976, and his B.A. from
the College of William and Mary in 1974. He joined the UF Department of History in
1992. Dr. Noll teaches courses on the History of Disability in America, Florida History,
Florida Environmental History, and Diversity in American History.

Join us as we honor
Gordon J. (Gordie) Wilson
for his extraordinary contribution to the preservation of St. Augustine's historical legacy.
The Board of Trustees will recognize Gordie Wilson with a reception on
May 7th, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Gordie Wilson retired in 2025 after more than 33 years as Superintendent of the Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments. During his tenure, he directed major preservation efforts, including the stabilization of the Castillo’s historic walls and terreplein, the conservation of its historic cannons, and planning for seawall improvements to safeguard the city’s historic core. Beyond his federal service, Wilson chaired the St. Augustine Historical Society’s Board of Trustees, the Presidio Commission, and served for over a decade on the City’s Historic Preservation Advisory Committee.
Established in honor of architect Herschel E. Shepard, the award recognizes extraordinary contributions to the preservation of St. Augustine’s historic legacy. Wilson’s leadership, partnerships, and lifelong dedication to historic preservation embody the spirit of this award.
What is the Herschel Shepard Award?
The Saint Augustine Historical Society annually considers nominees for its highest tribute to a person, organization, group or project that makes and extraordinary contribution to the preservation of St. Augustine’s historical legacy. The tribute is named for preservation architect Herschel E. Shepard in recognition of his distinguished career and outstanding contributions to the design and preservation of historic structures in St. Augustine. Herschel’s sphere of influence is national and international in scope but nowhere else has his generosity of spirit, exemplary dedication and extraordinary service been witnessed more than in Saint Augustine.
The award seeks to recognize others who, like Herschel, have put forth extraordinary efforts in preserving Saint Augustine’s storied past and have been inspirational examples of public citizenry.

the University of the Pacific.

"'A queer old Spanish town’: John Muir in/on Henry Flagler’s St. Augustine"
Much has been written about John Muir’s trek across post-Civil War Florida in
1867-68, a journey recounted in A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf. But this
was not Muir’s only trip to Florida. Though few people know it, Muir returned to
Florida in 1898, in the twilight of the Gilded Age, spending his first night of the
trip in St. Augustine and staying at Henry Flagler’s Hotel Alcazar. Come learn
about Muir’s brief stay in and comments on Henry Flagler’s St. Augustine.
