They did attempt to block the passage upstream but then were blown sky-high on 27 July 1816 when a lucky hotshot exploded the open powder magazines. The blast killed 270 blacks and injured more, depriving Seminoles of efficient black warriors and tons of military stores. (The New History of Florida. Gannon. P.191)
